Scale and polish
A scale and polish can be done by our dentists and it can take up to 45 minutes.
The first ‘scrape’ stage removes the deposits of plaque and tartar. Often an ultrasound scraper is used first to get rid of the bulk of the tartar, followed by specialised hand held instruments to scrape away any stubborn remains.
The next step is to 'polish' the teeth to make the surface really smooth. While polishing removes stains leaving teeth bright and shiny, it is not just a cosmetic procedure. It also smoothes away minor imperfections and patches of rough texture on the teeth to protect against further plaque build up.
Your dentist will advise you how often you should have a scale and polish. It's important to remember that professional cleaning is an addition to a good daily oral health routine, and should never replace twice daily brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and interproximal care with floss.
1. Helps prevent tooth loss
No matter how well you clean your teeth at home, over time there is likely to be a natural build up of plaque and bacteria on your gum line and teeth. Once hardened this plaque becomes tartar and is much more difficult to remove at home with brushing and flossing alone. This build of plaque and bacteria can in the long term cause gum disease and potentially the loss of teeth.
2. Deep cleans hard to reach teeth
When brushing and flossing your teeth, many people often focus on the teeth at the front of their mouth as these are the ones they can see. Your dentist is able to get a complete picture of your teeth and not only tell you where you need to pay more attention to cleaning but also provide them with a deep clean and remove any build up of plaque or tartar.
3. Reduces staining of teeth
Teeth can become superficially stained by many things including tea, coffee, wine and tobacco. Having your teeth professionally cleaned with a scale and polish will help remove any superficial stains that have built up over time and will help return your teeth to their natural colour. It’s also advised that if you choose to have teeth whitening that you have a scale and polish completed first so that your teeth can make the most of the whitening treatment.
4. Helps improve overall health
Having your teeth professionally cleaned gives your dentist the opportunity to check your oral health. Not only does this improve your oral health but having good oral hygiene can benefit your wellbeing. If dangerous bacteria in the mouth is not dealt with it has the potential to cause infection in other parts of the body. Regular visits to the dentists and a scale and polish will help prevent this from happening.
5. Prevents bad breath
One of the most common causes of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. If you don’t regularly and properly brush and floss your teeth, bacteria and particles of food may build up. This can lead to an unpleasant smell and a nasty taste in your mouth. Having regular dental checkups with your dentist and having a scale and polish will help keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy while preventing bad breath.
